Relocation Information
The West Metro Area is a wonderful place to live and work. You'll quickly see that the region has much to offer in the areas of business, entertainment, and culture.
Located in Lexington County, the West Metro suburban area of Greater Columbia is made up of a number of small communities, all located on the west side of the Congaree River and south of the Saluda River. The City of Cayce is a residential area located just across the Congaree River from downtown Columbia & USC via the Blossom Street bridge. Older neighborhoods built from the 1940's combine with newer, upscale housing developments to offer a wide range of home options. West Columbia is also across the river from downtown Columbia by way of the Gervais Street bridge. This older community, chartered in 1894 as "Brookland", was built around a mill and a business district at Meeting & State Streets. The New Brookland Historic District is one of the most intact mill villages in the Southeast and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Housing along the Congaree River is some of the area's most expensive. Visit www.westmetrochamber.com or call the West Metro Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center at 803-794-6504. West Columbia features stores, restaurants and unique shops in its Vista West Area.
Airport
As home to theColumbia Metropolitan Airport, the West Metro area serves as gateway to the entire Midlands region of South Carolina. The newly renovated airport is the region's jewel in the crown, making a powerful impression on first-time visitors and frequent travelers alike. The airport serves not only as a great ambassador welcoming travelers, but also as a key in attracting new businesses, such as United Parcel Service, to the West Metro region.
From the moment visitors step off the airplane onto the airport's unique blue and gray palmetto tree carpet, they know they have landed in the Palmetto State. A quick walk through the new connector takes them past beautiful landscaping resembling a cypress swamp. And once in the airport lobby, visitors will find themselves in the middle of a Southern "town square" complete with store fronts, street lights and benches.
In addition to making the airport more attractive, recent renovations have also improved service. The airline gates now accommodate more passengers and a wider variety of aircraft types and sizes. Moving sidewalks make getting to flights faster and easier. A common waiting area provides all gates with a central services and concession area. A new food court is located directly beneath the pyramid skylight. And the baggage claim area now includes more efficient baggage carousels and new car rental areas.
